The Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP) is a non-profit, community-based organization that serves Toronto’s diverse African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities. The mission of the agency is to reduce the spread of HIV infection within Toronto’s Black communities while enhancing the quality of life of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Position Summary:

Black CAP is seeking an Interim Peer Prevention Coordinator to support the delivery of HIVAIDS and harm reduction prevention and education programming. The Interim Peer Prevention Coordinator is responsible for developing strategies to communicate safely about prevention behaviors with sex partners (negotiating safer sex, disclosure, goal setting) as well developing sex positive strategies for safe enjoyment of sexual activity aimed at reducing unsafe sex practices and increasing treatment adherence.

 

Key responsibilities of this position include:

 

  • Providing Prevention Case Management (PCM) and other case management supports to Peers
  • Deliver PCM and other case management supports to Peers in sero-discordant and sero-concordant relationships monthly
  • Coordinate the development of Intake and assessment tools which will be used to assess risk, factors related to risk etc.,
  • Provide system navigation supports to Peers on an ongoing basis
  • Recruit, train and place Peers to complete peer activities to include Peers in all levels of program delivery
  • Supporting the delivery of workshops in areas related to safer sex, disclosure, goal setting and treatment adherence
  • Providing referrals as required to HIV/STI testing sites, other ASOs and services such as housing, mental health and employment
  • Attending staff and team meetings as well as relevant training sessions, as required
  • Performing other duties as may be assigned

 

We are seeking an individual with the following qualifications:

 

  • A commitment to harm reduction and a lived experience with HIVAIDS and the complexities within Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities. Awareness includes employment, volunteer or lived experience in these areas.
  • Comfort conducting outreach, education and the exchange of harm reduction supplies in a range of neighborhoods across the city.
  • An ability to lead and motivate teams of volunteers and students in conducting training and education.
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STIs and sexual health issues and the impact of HIV/AIDS in Toronto’s African or Caribbean communities and excellent skills and knowledge of community resources and support available.
  • Ability to accept feedback and take initiative as well as work independently and cooperatively with staff and volunteers in a culturally diverse environment and the ability to work in a sex positive, and anti-oppression focused environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and strong listening skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet targets, deadlines and manage multiple activities.
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point), database, internet and email are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • The ability to speak a language other than English is an asset.
