The Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP) is a non-profit, community-based organization that serves Toronto’s diverse African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities. The mission of the agency is to reduce the spread of HIV infection within Toronto’s Black communities while enhancing the quality of life of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Our approach to services recognizes that holistic approaches are required as we work with people who are living with, or at risk for, HIV. Black CAP is an inclusive space which provides services to a diverse ACB population that includes newcomers, LGBTQ communities, youth, and other at-risk populations. Black CAP is seeking a Women’s Support Worker to support African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) Women who are living with andor affected by HIVAIDS by providing system navigation support and counselling. In this role, the Support Worker will help address client’s complex care needs through increased access to culturally appropriate supports.
Key responsibilities of this position include:
- Assessing the needs of HIV infected and affected women, counselling, advising andor referring to other services, agencies or programs and developing strategies for each.
- Researching effective strategies and models for peer-based programming for individuals and groups to inform program delivery.
- Providing system navigation supports and identifying appropriate referrals to complimentary programming based on determinants of health framework.
- Delivering supportive counselling to African and Caribbean women living with HIVAIDS.
- Designing and delivering group interventionssupports for ACB women.
- Maintaining knowledge of existing and emerging services for ACB PHAs and developing new service relationships with relevant organizations.
- Representing the agency on appropriate community networks and working in conjunction with other agencies and community groups to co-ordinate/facilitate the delivery of services.
- Compiling statistical reports and records and preparing reports as required by funders and planning and evaluation initiatives for the program.
- Maintaining and expanding client base through outreach, which includes community visits, promoting community networks and developing outreach materials.
- Participating as a team member on the delivery of other activities in the Support Department and completing other duties as assigned by managementsupervisor.
- Participating in staff and team meetings, developing monthly reports and other duties as assigned.
We are seeking an individual with the following qualifications:
- A commitment to harm reduction and a lived experience with HIVAIDS and the complexities within Toronto’s African, Caribbean and Black communities. Awareness includes employment, volunteer or lived experience in these areas.
- Comfort conducting outreach, education and the exchange of harm reduction supplies in a range of neighborhoods across the city.
- An ability to lead and motivate teams of volunteers and students in conducting training and education.
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, STIs and sexual health issues and the impact of HIV/AIDS in Toronto’s African or Caribbean communities and excellent skills and knowledge of community resources and support available.
- Ability to accept feedback and take initiative as well as work independently and cooperatively with staff and volunteers in a culturally diverse environment and the ability to work in a sex positive, and anti-oppression focused environment.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and strong listening skills.
- Demonstrated ability to meet targets, deadlines and manage multiple activities.
- Knowledge of MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point), database, internet and email are essential.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Self-motivated and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment.
- The ability to speak a language other than English is an asset.
