The Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention (Black CAP) is a non-profit, community-based organization that serves Toronto’s diverse African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities. The mission of the agency is to reduce the transmission of HIV within Toronto’s Black communities while enhancing the quality of life of those living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Job description

Black CAP’s TIC pilot-project builds on existing evidenced-based trauma models to deliver trauma-informed services in an environment where service users do not experience further traumatization or re-traumatization and where they can make decisions about their mental health and HIV-related needs at a pace that feels safe to them. Our goal is to develop a trauma-informed model of care that that is responsive to the needs and lived experience of Black gbMSM that can be scaled up.

 

Our proposed pilot project has three main objectives:

  1. To provide culturally appropriate trauma-informed support that promotes retention in care by encouraging engagement through collaboration, transparency, trust, and consistent supportiveness.
  2. To evaluate the feasibility, reach, and sustainability of Black CAP’s TIC pilot-program; and
  3. To refine this model of care and develop an implementation plan for future scale up.

 

 

Key responsibilities:

To succeed in this role you will;

 

  • Promote resilience among HIV-positive MSM by helping to build skills for overcoming adversity with a customized approach to symptom reduction, including strategies to prevent trauma relapse. This approach can significantly enhance ART adherence and mitigate high-risk behaviors
  • Effectively address the complex challenges faced by our target population, by providing intensive, individualized care management led by a social worker and a team of individuals who are relevant to the well-being of the client. This will include providing clients with resources and referrals to specialized trauma-specific treatments, and other supports.
  • Support clients in deepening their understanding of community and individual trauma and inform strategies to promote healing and resilience.
  • Screen for high-risk behaviors associated with trauma among Black gbMSM.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor/Master of Social Work Degree orequivalent Masters level university degree.
  • Certification and membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers ( OCSWSSW) as relevant.
  • 3-5 years direct therapy experience and 3-5 years’ experience working with the African Caribbean and Black LGBTQ+ community.
  • Knowledge of issues affecting same gender loving males facing barriers to access in an urban environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, including computer literacy.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal, with individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge of a second (or more) language and culture is an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment and counselling techniques for working with individuals, couples and communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in group work and community development.
  • Expertise in recovery and harm reduction approaches to care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the impact of social, economic, environmental and cultural issues and its effects on same gender loving males.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate psycho-educational support groups.
  • Ability to effectively deal with client-related crises.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends
